How to choose a cat door or dog door

Make sure the product you have your eye on is a suitable size for your pet. There should be a few centimetres of clearance for your pet to move through the door comfortably. Cat doors are often smaller than dog doors, but small dogs may still be able to use them if there is enough space. Deciding what cat door or dog door to choose will largely depend on the material of the door you’re fitting it on. If your door is wooden or made of uPVC, purchase the product as is. For glass doors, a Trade Tested adaptor is required along with your pet door.

Can you install a dog door yourself?

Yes, you can install dog doors yourself. Begin by choosing where you’d like the dog door to be located, and then remove the door from its hinges. Mark out the size of the door, drill holes at the edges of the outline and cut a hole where the dog door will be placed. Attach and secure the dog door and reattach the door to its hinges. If you are fitting the dog door onto glass, a qualified glazier may be required.

Where is the best place to install a dog door?

Dog doors, like cat doors, must be installed low to the ground to encourage your animals to use them, but not too low that they need to crouch. Measure the size of your cat or dog’s legs and fit the door a couple of centimetres lower. Opt for door installation rather than wall for an easier setup. Pet doors are commonly fitted on the opposite side of the handle. Make sure the exterior of the door is suitable for the installation.
