Was able to take readings from various surfaces (bathroom tiles, drywall and straight timber). The surprise came from the variation in readings taken only a few mm apart from each other (hence 4/5 stars). The most inconsistent readings were seen in the wetter areas like bathroom tiles and drywalls on the other side of said bathroom walls. Drywalls in living areas were pretty consistent with higher readings closer to window frames (expected). The most consistent readings were obtained on pieces of raw timber that I had kept drying in the garage for a few years already. Overall happy with the product as it will provide me with a spot check method in the house, but I'm not sure the variations in readings will prove satifactory to a professional).
This item is good at detecting “moisture”, but the readings are inconsistent. If you do the same area twice, within a few seconds of one another - you will get different readings. The values are also skewed if there is metal (ie screws or nails), which is really about 90% of the critical areas you are interested, so it will report higher values as a result. It is also very poor at corners- it says to stay 8-10cm away, which is kind of pointless to use for corners which is also another critical area for moisture. Furthermore there is no way to calibrate the values given (its 0 to 100 scale) with moisture content.
I recently had my moisture meter lost or stolen, this was the only one around that had the features I needed for work at a reasonable price, while waiting for new equipment to come from Australia. Has been fantastic and provides me with the vital info I need for the insurance claims I deal with. Will eventually buy a few more as will be fantastic to have a few back ups.
It's great and we'll priced
