Cut bamboo can last for 10 years plus easily. If you want to keep this looking its best and lasting the longest, you could put a coat of outdoor oil or stain on it after a year or so. Note the bamboo will fade in colour and can get some surface mould in a shady area, but this can be scrubbed off

We use whole "round" lengths of bamboo, as it's a natural product the size does vary a little bit but the largest should be 40mm. There is no set method, it depends on where it is going. You could keep it simple drill and screw it to the fence using galvanised or stainless steel screws. It is pretty light, so you shouldn't need too many fasteners, just enough to hold it securely in a breeze or if a cat jumps on it etc. The screws should be approx 3mm in diameter and about 30 - 40 mm long, the idea being that you pre-drill the holes in the bamboo, to avoid any splitting that could occur if you just tried to punch the screws through. Figure out the diameter of the thicker pieces of bamboo and this will give you an idea of the length of screw you need. Other options include the wire and screw eye method which can be quite fiddly - there are guides online for this if you google. Whatever you go for, as your fence is not completely linear, you may want to think about using spacer batons or similar to make it all line up and help with moisture dispersal. Yes you can trim it to fit.
